Course Description

The Paxton Patterson College & Career Ready Labs model is a hands‑on, problem‑based learning approach designed to help students explore careers and discover their interests and aptitudes before they graduate Paxton/Patterson. It’s structured in three levels: AwarenessExploration, and Experience, with Level 2 – Exploration being the focus for most middle and high school programs

Intro to Health Science

Structural Engineering

Expectations:

  • DO be in assigned seat when the bell rings. 
  • DO be prepared - supplies: pencil, eraser, engineering notebook, ruler, and headphones.
  • DO follow directions and keep a positive attitude.
  • DO be respectful, responsible, & cooperative. 
  • DO follow all safety guidelines outlined by each module.

Instructional Materials

Various activities and learning experiences will be associated with each of the above modules. These activities and lessons will include design, drafting, measuring, laboratory and machine safety, and a selection of projects with real-world applications. Students will be assessed on completion and quality of all assignments and projects through an LMS provided by the Paxton Patterson program.

There is no textbook for this course. There will be very few handouts and worksheets. Most of the work is completed through the Paxton Patterson LMS portal while students complete hands-on projects in class.

Student Supplied Materials:

Engineering Notebook, pencil, eraser, coloring pencils, headphones, and a ruler.

Evaluation/Grading

Academic Grades will be based on student performance during class and projects.  Student’s grade is determined from a percentage of the total points calculated.  Check Aeries portal often for student’s progress.

Grades will be based on the following percentage scale:

A  93%; A-  90; B+  87; B  83; B-  80; C+  77; C  73; C-  70; D+  68; D  63; D-  60; F<60

Work Habits and Citizenship

Students are expected to conduct themselves in the classroom according to the policies outlined in the school’s student handbook and classroom-posted rules. No food or drink is allowed in class or the lab. Be aware that this is a shop class full of real-world tools and equipment. Serious injuries can occur if instructions are not followed. A student will be recommended for removal from the class when he/she is a chronic offender.

Extra Credit

Students will be able to earn extra credit by either doing make-up assignments or taking advantage of office hours.

Makeup Work

It is the student’s responsibility to take care of work missed while absent. All work is expected to be in by the final cut-off date whether absent or not. Remember, module rotation is every 10 active school days. Students will switch modules during this time whether he/she has completed the module or not. No exceptions.

Because of some individual needs/circumstances, I reserve the right to modify this disclosure to meet certain needs of students in helping them receive the best education possible. 

Pictures/Video:

For some projects, student/teacher may take pictures as well as videotape. By signing this disclosure, you give me permission to post student pictures/videos for educational purposes – such as classroom use and various displays.

ANY DAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT, SUPPLIES, OR BOOKS WILL BE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE STUDENT!
